Municipal Bonds

Munis or Municipal bonds are issued by public entities not part of the federal government, usually states, cities and counties. Like corporate bonds, munis have some default risk. Munis have a tax advantage in that they are not taxed by the federal government, and may not be taxed by local taxing bodies either. Because of their tax advantage, interest rates on munis are usually lower than other bonds of similar risk.
